Macau to Hong Kong International Airport for an Early Morning Flight

Visiting Macau as a side trip to Hong Kong tour has been made convenient by the direct ferry from Macau to SkyPier at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).  If one passenger is flying via one of the participating airlines, then this privilege should be taken advantage of.  It prevents one from going back to Hong Kong City and taking public transport to HKIA which is quite a hassle.  But, like any other services, this ferry service is not 24 hours.  The first ferry is at 7:15am and the last one is before 8pm.  So, what if one have an early morning flight, like before 10am?  What options are available?

There are actually three options available if one is caught with a situation like this.  One may prove to be more convenient than the other options, all, will bring you where you needed to be.

  1. Taking a ferry to Hong City and spend the night at one of the hotels near HKIA.
  2. Take the last ferry from Macau to Hong Kong City and take public transport to HKIA.
  3. Taking the last ferry from Macau directly to HKIA and spend the night at the airport.

Taking a ferry to Hong Kong City and spend a night in Hong Kong

What is bad with spending another night in Hong Kong?  Nada.  Hong Kong is one of the busiest night life destinations in Asia and spending a night is worthwhile.  Leave Macau in the early afternoon and take the ferry either going to Sheung Wan or to Kowloon and secure a place to stay.  Book early if possible for the best available rate and choose hotels near HKIA.  MTR (train) runs until 1am and going anywhere to the city is not a problem.

Depending on the time of your flight, you can take any overnight ferry from Macau to Hong Kong City.  The ferry takes one hour, while, the journey from Hong Kong ferry terminal to the airport takes about 45minutes to 1 hour by public transport, shorter by taxi.  A passenger should be at HKIA at least 2 or 3 hours before the flight, depending on airline rules.  So, for example, your flight is at 8am.  You must be at the airport by 6, the latest ferry you can take is 2:30 am.  Taking 4am ferry is a little risky.  Better early than sorry, right?

This option is not for everyone.  Even if you want to stay in the airport, if your airline is not on the list of participating airlines for early morning flight, you will not be allowed to take the last ferry.  Here is the list of the participating airlines:  Early Morning Flight Participating Airlines

Taking the last ferry from Macau would mean waiting for more than 12 hours at HKIA.  Remember, you will be at the restricted area of HKIA and are exempted for Hong Kong immigration, so, you are not allowed to go out.  This is the best option if you didn’t book any hotel on your last night or if you are short of budget.
